EVANS, BOHANNON, BOHANNAN, BOHANAN, FRAKES, PUFFETT, SMITH

December 23, 1845 ---- March 27, 1917

Penry Evans was the son of James and Mary Evans, and was born in Wales, December 23, 1844 and died at his home in this city on East 3rd Street Tuesday, March 27th, without premonitory illness. After dinner he remarked to Mrs. Evans that feeling a little tired he would lie down a while. After a short time Mrs. Evans stepped into his room and found him breathing his last. He had previously experienced a slight stroke of palsy and his sudden death is attributed to a recurring attack.

In 1870 Mr. Evans came from his native country to Wisconsin where he remained about four years and came to Wright County, Iowa in 1874 and made his home on his fine farm in Woolstock township until ten years ago when he came with his family to Eagle Grove and purchased his fine residence on East 3rd street. On July 7th, 1874 he was married to Miss Ellen Bohannan who with eight children survive to mourn his loss. He also leaves two brothers and one sister, all in Wales. Five grandchildren also survive him. The children are three sons, George, Jas., and Harvey, and five daughters, Mrs. Mary Frakes, Mrs. Elizabeth Puffett, Mrs. Maude Frakes, Mrs. Myrtle Smith, and Blanch.

Mr. Evans belonged to that company of noble pioneers who came to this country about fifty years ago. They found a wilderness. Their tireless energy and unimpeachable integrity laid foundations for one of the finest communities in our state. They have seen changes which read like a fairy tale or a page of romance. In this group of pioneers, Mr. Evans name will ever have a worthy place. His name is a synonym for honor; and if he had an enemy in the world his family does not know of it. In this hour of their sorrow, the members of the family have great comfort in the knowledge that their loved one was held in such universal esteem. He was a thoroughly good man measuring up to the highest standard of citizen, husband, father, and neighbor. If he gave his word, no bond was needed. He will be sorely grieved by the bereaved wife and children, and every acquaintance feels a personal loss.

The funeral was held at the Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Hugh F. Moore conducted the services and preached the sermon. The children were all present at the obsequies, except Mrs. Puffett.
