William Ross Was Longtime County Resident

William Montgomery Ross was born at Galt, [Wright county] Iowa, July 18, 1881 where he spent his childhood and grew to manhood. He was one of seven children born to Thompson and Margaret Ross. Before coming to Emmet county he spent one year and a half teaching school in Wright county. In 1902 he came to Emmet county where he engaged in farming with his brother for two years near Maple Hill. While here he became a member of the Presbyterian church in which he was an active worker until his death.

In 1907 he was united in marriage to Ellen Josephine Ball who preceded him in death on May 22, 1916. In 1912 he moved to a farm near Dolliver where he resided for 24 years. While he was here he became a member of the school board and other local activities. In March, 1934, he began farming in the Armstrong area. He had been semi-retired until he passed away, March 17, at the age of 74 years, eight months.

To the couple seven children were born. David who died in infancy; Harold of Estherville, Rachel (Mrs. Joe Sampson) of Dolliver, Helen (Mrs. Joe Horral) of Ceylon, Willie of Armstrong, Maxine (Mrs. Don Hoppus) of Ringsted, Betty (Mrs. Clifton Guinn) of Armstrong; also surviving are 18 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers and one granddaughter. He is also survived by two sisters: Mary (Mrs. Philip Peak) of Estherville and Margarite (Mrs. Oscar Hackbarth) of Mason City; one brother, F. B. Ross of Emporia, Kan.
