Ruth Louise Pieper, daughter of Robert and Bernice Mills Fickle, was born April 3, 1921, at Clarion, Iowa. She graduated from Oelwein High School and later from Upper Iowa University in Fayette. On August 21, 1945, Ruth was united in marriage with Leo Raatz. His death occurred on October 7, 1966. On October 28, 1967, she was married to John Pieper. They made their home in the Hawkeye area, and following John’s death on June 26, 1982, Ruth continued to live in Hawkeye. She taught for many years in the Randalia, Hawkeye, Fayette, and Sumner school systems.

Ruth’s death occurred on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union, following a brief illness. She was 90 years old and had been a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye, Order of the Eastern Star, and the Hawkeye Garden Club.

She is survived by one son, Don (Mary Jean) Raatz of St. Louis, Missouri; one daughter, Sandra (Warren) Jencks of Hawkeye; one stepson, Jim (Brenda) Pieper of Texas; six grandchildren, Mark (Melanie) Jencks, Scott (Linda) Jencks, Tracy (Aaron) Grimes, Jessica Raatz, Jonathan (Jaclyn) Pieper, and Jeffery (Lisa) Pieper; and several great grandchildren (George). In addition to her two husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by one stepson, Leo Don Raatz; one stepdaughter, Lois Pieper; and one sister, Evelyn Jane Levendusky.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 21, 2011, at the Hawkeye Cemetery with Rev. Jason Princer officiating. Following the committal service, and beginning at 12:00 noon on Thursday, all are invited to the United Methodist Church in Hawkeye for a time of fellowship and lunch with the family. The family suggests that memorials be given in Ruth’s name to the Hawkeye Public Library or Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye is in charge of arrangements.
