Olaf Amdahl was born on August 17, 1908, to Ole and Tobia Weland Amdahl near Stavanger, Norway, where he later attended grade school. He came to the United States in 1927 at the age of 19 and started farming with his brother, Iver, around the Vincent and Badger area. He then sailed the Great Lakes on the Iron Ore Boats as a wheelsman. He was united in marriage to Edna E. Hinrichsen on December 25, 1937 at the Samuel Lutheran Church parsonage in Eagle Grove. They farmed for several years west of Eagle Grove, and after retiring from farming, they ran the Knotty Pine Grocery Store in Eagle Grove for a few years. He was a longtime member of Samuel Lutheran Church.
Olaf Amdahl died on Sunday, July 19, 1998, at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove at the age of 89. Survivors includes three sons, David and wife, Jill, Decorah, Myron and wife, Jana, Eagle Grove, and Maynard and wife, Barb, Ankeny; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren: a sister, Karen Marvik, 93, of Stavanger, Norway; a brother-in-law, Vergil Jacobsen, Eagle Grove; a sister-in-law, Lillie Gronbach, Clear Lake; and a niece Esther Bender, Council Bluffs. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Edna, who died October 24, 1997; an infant son. Marvin; three brothers, Hartwig, Iver, and Klaus; and two sisters, Ellen and Martha. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 1998 at the Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Reverend Carlton Shaw officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home in Eagle Grove is in charge of the arrangements.
