February 25, 1872 ---- May 31, 1975

Adolph M. Anderson, Eagle Grove's oldest resident, died Saturday evening, at the age of 103 years, 3 months, and 6 days, at Trinity Hospital, Fort Dodge, where he was a patient for about two weeks. He had been in good health all his life, and until a few months ago had a private room in the Rotary Ann Home. When it became necessary for him to have some minor care, he moved to a room in the infirmary section, but continued to come and go, often leaving for several days to visit in the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Zeigler, at Laurens. He was hospitalized only twice before his final illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Kastler - Babcock – DeYoung Funeral Home in charge of Rev. Donald Glazier, pastor of the United Methodist Church. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Anderson is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Zeigler, and one son, Harlan, of St. Ansgar, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

When he celebrated his 100th birthday on Feb. 25, 1972, open house was held at the Rotary Ann Home and hundreds of relatives and friends called to greet him. He was the second Eagle Grove resident to reach 100 years. The late Charles H. Morse, M.D. was 100 in 1955.

Anderson was born in Ostergotland, Hain County, Sweden, Feb. 25, 1872. He came to the United States with his father when he was 9 years old, and they went to Boone to make a home. He attended the Boone schools, worked in a repair shop, and became an apprentice machinist in the Chicago and North Western Shops. He became a full fledged machinist, and in about 1900, he began to work permanently for the Eagle Grove shops of the Chicago and North Western R.R. He worked for the C. & N.W. 46 years and retired on pension.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson became the parents of four children: Elsie, Mrs. Clarence Orr; Ivan; Harlan; and Ione, Mrs. Zeigler. Mrs. Anderson died in 1964 and he was also preceded in death by his daughter and son, Mrs. Orr and Ivan.

Anderson was a member of the early day Eagle Grove Volunteer Fire Department, a life member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the National Association of Machinists. His hobbies were fishing, hunting and walking. After moving to the Rotary Ann Home in 1969 he continued his daily walks, often walking to the business district or to his old homestead on North Wright Ave.
