Funeral services for Bret Nathan Sunner, 25, of Cedar Rapids and former resident of Clear Lake were held June 12 at 1:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake with Rev. Robert Rod officiating. Burial was in the Clear Lake cemetery. Sunner, a Cedar Rapids police officer, was killed by a shotgun blast when answering a domestic dispute in Cedar Rapids. He is the grandson of Mrs. Helen Sunner and Mrs. Doris Godfrey, both of Eagle Grove. About 200 police officers from across the state attended the funeral in Clear Lake. Services were also held in Cedar Rapids on June 11.

Sunner was born Jan. 21, 1959, to Gordon and Bonnie (Godfrey) Sunner in Harlan. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1977 and attended the University of Iowa. He went to work with the Cedar Rapids Police Department in December of 1981, and received eight commendation awards while with the force. One commendation was a life saving award. Sunner is survived by his parents in Clear Lake, and two sisters, Gail Sunner, Clear Lake, and Mrs. Jeff (Becky) Heine, Clear Lake.
