November 10, 1872 ----- October 23, 1954

Tillie C. Smith passed away Saturday morning, October 23 at her home west of town. She was the eldest daughter of Rier and Kari Johnson, pioneers of this vicinity. She was born in Winneshiek county and came with her parents to Humboldt county where she attended school. She grew to womanhood in this community and married Henry Christopher. Within two years her life was saddened by the death of her husband and an infant son.

Later she was united in marriage to Arthur A. Smith, who died in 1942. To this union a daughter and son were born.

Tillie had the happy faculty of looking at the bright side of life and was a source of cheer to those about her. She was a devoted wife and mother, a loyal friend and a true believer in all the good things of life. She was confirmed in the Lutheran church and at the time of her death was a member of Samuel Evangelical Lutheran church. For many years she attended the Methodist Church in Eagle Grove with her husband and was an active worker in class 16 there. She was affiliated with the Eastern Star and was a willing helper in the various other organizations.

She is survived, by one son, Arthur J. Smith of Eagle Grove, Ia, one daughter Klarize Morrison of Shreveport, La., one brother, Lars R. Johnson and three sisters, Miss Leva Johnson, Mrs. Cora Abraham and Mrs. Anna Hoveland, and one step-son, Joseph H. Smith of Long Beach, Calif.

Funeral services were held from Kastler’s Funeral Chapel Monday, October 25, 1954 at 1:30 p. m. and from Samuel Evangelical Lutheran church at 2.00 p. m. Pastor B. F. Molstre officiated. John Moklebust sang and was accompanied by Lois Luthro. Casket bearers were Ernest Kallem, Robert Christopher, Joe Gearhart, Orin Emerson, Daryl Harlan, John Cole. Interment was made at Rose Hill Cemetery.
