Obituary of Lottie M. Smith

This community was inexpressably saddened on Sunday morning, June 23rd by the wholly unexpected news of the death of Mrs. Lottie Smith in the hospital at Ft. Dodge on Saturday evening at 10 o'clock. She had been sick about ten days and after an operation at the hospital she seemed so improved her complete recovery was apparently assured and all anxiety for her condition was changed to happy assurance. It is thought the sudden and fatal termination of her illness was due to a blood clot on the brain. The remains were brought to Eagle Grove Sunday morning and conveyed to the so recently happy but now bereaved home.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Ley, and was born on their farm in Woolstock township June 9th. 1877. In 1893 she came with her parents to Eagle Grove and March 10th, 1897, was married to A. A. Smith, who with one son, nine years of age, lives to mourn her untimely death. Her father and mother, and sister, Mrs. Richard Woodard of this place, her brother Harry of California, aud brother Ed V. Ley, of Houston, Texas, also survive her.

The funeral was held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Methodist church after a prayer service at the home at 1 o'clock. There were many, beautiful tributes of flowers, the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church contributing a lovely wreath, and the Woodmen Circle a beautiful pillow. The deceased was a member of the Methodist church having united with it at the age of 15 years, and she was an exemplary christian, faithful wife and loving mother. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery, but her many virtues as neighbor and friend are a fragrant and perpetual memory with every acquaintance. The large auditorium of the church was filled with sympathizing friends and neighbors gathered to join in a last tribute of love and respect for the departed. Among those from abroad attending the funeral were E. V. Ley of Houston, Texas; Mr. and Mrs. Roy F. Smith of Tower City, N. D.; Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Smith of Iowa Falls.

Card of Thanks. To all those who so kindly assisted in the time of our great bereavement we desire to express our heartfelt thanks.
A. A. SMITH AND SON, JOSEPH HARRY
