January 11, 1842 ---- August 1, 1907

James Poole was born at Pittsburgh, Penn., Jan. 11, 1842. When a young man he came with his father to Iowa where he lived near Cedar Rapids. He was married to Sara C. Manahan early in 1862, and six weeks later enlisted in the 13th U. S. Infantry with Wm. T. Sherman as colonel of the regiment. He was wounded in the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Vicksburg, and for months was incapacitated for active service in the field. In the interim he had charge of a department in the military hospital, Lawson Hospital, St. Louis. At the close of the war he went to Ohio for his wife and started the new home. Here the children were born.

In May 1885 he came to Eagle Grove to take charge of the painting department of the C. & N. W. R. R. shops. From that time on he has been interested in, and identified with all the interests of the town, especially so in the church and school work.

Three years ago he was stricken with an incurable form of heart disease and since then has suffered almost constantly from it. Eighteen months ago Mrs. Poole was taken away and from that time Mr. Poole has been with his children. For a time with his eldest son, the great part of the last year with his son in Eagle Grove. June 25th he went to Denver to visit his son, Edward, and daughter, Maude, living there. He had been gradually failing for some time but suffered more than usual the last few days of his life. Thursday evening, Aug. 1st, he lay down to rest awhile, saying he was so tired. He went to sleep and in a few minutes awakened, but on the other side. His release came suddenly and painlessly.

Comment upon Mr. Poole's life is unnecessary to those who knew him. He was an exemplary citizen, a man thoroughly just in all his dealings, and in his Christian life be showed that he had been with Christ and had learned of him.

Mr. Poole was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this place the last twelve years being in official position all of that time, was a class leader at the time of his death. A man always in his place doing his whole duty as he saw it. The funeral was held in the Methodist church here Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. C. Chapter conducting the services. The floral tributes were many and beautiful and the church was filled with sympathizing friends. The living children were all present, the son and daughter-in-law from Chicago, Edward and Miss Maude from Denver and Harry Poole and family of this city. The interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery. The bereaved friends have the sympathy of all in their sorrow.
