Jacob Fiala, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fiala Sr., was born in Czechoslovakia, March 31, 1866. He came with his parents to Belle Plaine, Iowa, in 1867. They later lived in LeGrand and Montour, Iowa, moving to Tama in 1882. He attended the public schools in Belle Plaine.
He was married to Mary Benda at Tama, Iowa, December 31, 1889. Three children were born to this union: Helena, Mrs. Joseph Carson; Catherine, Mrs. John Reynolds; and Gertrude, Mrs. George Sullivan. All three daughters preceded him in death.
After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Fiala lived in Ceresco, Nebraska for two years, then were in Tama for several years but spent the past forty years in Eagle Grove. He was employed most of his life by the Chicago North Western railroad. He was a member and regular attendant of the Eagle Grove Congregational church for many years.
After a few weeks illness, he passed away at his home on North Cadwell avenue, May 2, 1946, at the age of eighty years, one month, and two days.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Fiala; four brothers, John and Wencel Fiala of Tama, Alfred Fiala of Council Bluffs, and Tom Fiala of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Howard H. Carson and Mrs. Russell Knutzon of Des Moines, Mrs. Larry Bram and Mrs. Dan Mitchell of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. C. L. Richards Jr. of Tulsa, Okla.; Mrs. M. N. Smith of Lusk, Wyoming, and George M. Sullivan Jr. in the navy; three great grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
