November 25, 1851 ---- August 28, 1918

Elsie M. Young was born in Delaware county, New York, Nov. 25, 1851, and moved with her parents to Fort Dodge, Iowa, when she was about three years of age, and grew to womanhood on their homestead near Fort Dodge, and was married to Rev. Charles B. Winter at Fort Dodge, Ia. Sept. 23, 1872, by Rev. William Preston. To this union two children were born, one daughter, Julia Elsie, who died in childhood; and George M. who has made his home with his parents in Eagle Grove.

Mrs. Winter was one of a family of seven children, three brothers and three sisters, a1l of whom have preceded her into the great beyond except one sister, Mrs. E. R. Rising, Oklahoma City, Okla., who has been a great comfort and assistance to her sister in the last days of her earthly life. She is also survived by her husband who has been her constant companion for over 46 years and her son, George, to whom she was devoted with a perfect mother's love.

Mrs. Winter had been in poor health ever since they took up their residence here. But through it all there was no murmuring. On the last day of her life it was evident that she know the end was near but she did not say a word for fear of causing anxiety and grief to her loved ones.

Her life was one of devotion, sacrifice and service for her family and tender ministrations to others. Her own son says that the prominent characteristic in her life was kindness, that he could not remember of her having spoken an unkind word to her family or concerning anyone else. To know her was to love her. Even the birds would gather at her window to be fed from her hand, while they would fly from others.

Mrs. Winter as a bride went immediately to work with her husband in the pastorate of the Methodist Episcopal church in which capacity she was a large factor in the splendid success of her husband's ministry. All the departments of the work felt her influence. Always willing, always kind and sympathetic. The glory of God and the salvation of souls was the great purpose of her life. In the other world she will meet many who will give her credit for their salvation.

She served as pastor's wife at Spencer, Belmond, Storm Lake, Ida Grove, Newell, West Side, Alta, Fonda, Eagle Grove, Sibley, Hartley, Rockwell City, Lake City, Clarion, Luverne, Hardy, Rutland, her health being such that they decided to superannuate, and for the last 10 years has been a sweet influence in the community at the west end of Broadway.

Her hope was in the cross of Christ, she could say truly with Paul, "God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of Christ.", but she now has passed by the cross and the hands that were pierced on the cross has placed on her head a jeweled crown that will endure forever.

The funeral was held in the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2:30, Rev Acheson preaching a very appropriate and sympathetic sermon. The interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. The casket was embowered with the most beautiful floral gifts of societies, friends, and neighbors.

Among those from a distance here to attend the funeral were the sister of Mrs. Winter, Mrs. Rising of Oklahoma City, and the widow of Mr. Winter's brother, of Ft. Dodge.

Both Rev. Winter and George are in poor health at this time and unable to personally express their thanks for the many kindnesses shown them during their great affliction, but they are grateful for the very timely aid and assistance given them and their appreciation knows no bounds.
