November 12, 1900 --- January 31, 1928

Selma Carolina Weland was born in Holmes, Iowa, November 12, 1900. She was baptized by Rev. C. J. Eastvold and was a member of the Holmes Lutheran church. In the year 1913 the Weland family moved to Eagle Grove. Here she was confirmed by Rev. T. J. Spande. She attended the local high school and graduated in 1920. Early in the year 1920 she was taken sick with influenza which weakened her considerably and gradually developed into tuberculosis. She was unable to be along with her classmates at the graduation exercises.

In June, 1920, Selma, accompanied by her mother, her sister, Rose, and little Marjorie left for Canon City, Colorado, that she might, if possible, regain health and strength. She felt much better out there, was up and around and even strong enough to take long walks. Her sister, Rose, had secured a position as a teacher in the schools of Canon City, so the two sisters stayed together these years. Mrs. Weland had in the meantime returned to Eagle Grove.

Last summer Selma became somewhat more failing again. On the 23rd of January this year she was taken down with intestinal flu. Her remaining strength gave away, and she passed from time to eternity Tuesday, January 31, about 6:40 in the evening. Her age was 27 years, 2 months, 19 days. Her sister who had stood by her so faithfully all these trying years took the remains back to the old home at Eagle Grove for burial.

As her church, the West Side Lutheran, was under repairs, the funeral was held at the East Side Lutheran church Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. P. Ljostveit and also Rev. T. Severtson spoke. The text was the First Psalm, about the happiness of the godly, and the unhappiness of the ungodly. An unusually large number, especially young people, were present to pay their last tribute to a very dear friend and express sympathy with the bereaved family in the honor of sorrow.

Selma is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Weland of Eagle Grove; one brother, Bert, also of Eagle Grove, five sisters, Mrs. Anna Lund, Clarkfield, Minn.; Mrs. O. Amoson, Holmes; Rose, Canon City, Colo.; Emma of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Clifford Simpson of Eagle Grove; and a foster sister, Marjorie, staying with the parents. All were present at the funeral except Emma of Los Angeles. One brother, Silas, had passed on and one sister, Clara, died in infancy.

The departed sister had received a good training and instruction in the Christian truths. She lived a virtuous life, used the word of God and prayed. We hope she found Christ as her personal savior and entered into His rest who has said “Come unto me all ye who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest”.

May God bless, strengthen and comfort our friends in their bereavement.
