Mrs. Lena Mellgren, Lena Larson, daughter of Barbara and Ole K. Larson, was born on a farm near Pontiac, Ill. April 21, 1879. When she was yet a very young girl, the family moved on a farm near Eagle Grove, Iowa. April 13, 1895 she was united in marriage to John Mellgren. She passed away at the home of her two daughters, Hazel and Josephine and her son Richard in Minneapolis, Minn., Wednesday, November 14, 1951.
Mrs. Mellgren was a resident of this community since her early youth with the exception of the last year, when she lived with her son and two daughters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was a humble and compassionate wife and mother. Her personality was a real inspiration to her family and the many friends who had the privilege to fellowship with her. Her love and unselfishness meant much to her family. She was a charter member of Samuel Evangelical Lutheran congregation and was faithful and active as long as her health would permit. She was also an active member of Samuel Mission Aid and took active part and interest in the work of that organization. The Word of God brought her much comfort and joy. Through that Word she found the way to peace and joy in Jesus Christ. The comfort of that Word was her strength and only hope of a better life in eternity.
She was preceded in death by her husband, November 15, 1949 and is survived by 10 children: Hazel, Josephine and Richard of Minneapolis, Minn., Beatrice Kastler and Blanche Barker of Clarion, Iowa, Ione Askvig of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Ardythe Wells and Bernice McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa, Claire Hanson of Belmond, Iowa and Oscar of Eagle Grove, Iowa, and 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, November 17, 1951 at Kastler Funeral Chapel at 1:30 p. m. and at Samuel Evangelical Lutheran Church at 2:00 p. m. Pastor B. F. Molstre officiated. Jerry Hanson, a grandson, sang two solos and a mixed quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sunner, Ann Falk, and H. J. Luthro also sang. Casketbearers were: Carl Sunner, Fred Vaksdal, Sam Joberg, Cliff Simpson, George Brown and Ernest C. Koehn. Interment was made at Rose Hill cemetery.
