Verne Hardy was born Feb. 22, 1887, in Humboldt, Iowa. His parents were pioneer settlers and he the youngest of five children. He grew up in Humboldt and attended the public schools. In 1905, when Verne was 18 years old, his father died. He then learned the laundry business and developed the city cleaning business, which he continued for 45 years in Humboldt.

On Dec. 31, 1919, he was united in marriage to Frances Foster of Clarion, Iowa, and they lived in the Hardy building which he had built in 1918 for his laundry and dry cleaning business. In 1925 he built a home and moved his business to the present location. Verne's health had been impaired for the last two years, but he continued his work. A few weeks ago he was ordered to take a rest from his work. He and his wife were visiting her brother-in-law and sister in Newton, Iowa, when he suffered a sudden heart attack.

He died soon after the attack early Sunday morning, June 6, at the age of 67 years, 3 Months and 14 days. Verne was a member of the Methodist church, the Humboldt-Dakota City Chamber of Commerce and the IOOF lodge. For a number of years he had been a member of the Elks lodge at Fort Dodge.

He is survived by his widow; a sister, May of Peoria, Illinois, and four nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in Humboldt Tuesday, June 8, with the Rev. Frank O. Johnson, the pastor, in charge, assisted by the Rev. Robert J. Watson, pastor of the Congregational church. The flower committee consisted of Mrs Frank Lowder, Mrs Kenneth Logan and Mrs Wm. Queally. Stanley Nelson sang two selections, accompanied by Mrs Albert Morehouse. Casket bearers were Frank Lowder, Kenneth Logan, Harold DeGroote, Paul Ramsey, Don Pierson, and Royal Bennett. Interment was in Union cemetery.
