Alberta Kemna was born on July 2, 1915, at Martinsburg, Missouri, to Bernard and Elizabeth (Boehm) Kemna. She attended Catholic Schools at Martinsburg through 8th grade when she then attended Laddonia High School from where she graduated. She then received her teaching certificate from Kirksville College in Kirksville, Missouri. On February 18, 1936, she was united in marriage to Matt J. Mersch at West Bend, Iowa. Together they lived in Goldfield for 6 years before moving to Eagle Grove in 1942. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of America, Sacred Heart Guild, KYN Club, the Troy Culture Club, and the Woolstock Homemakers.

Alberta Mersch died Saturday August 3, 1996, at the Hamilton County Public Hospital in Webster City at the age of 81. Survivors include her husband, Matt; 3 daughters, Bernice Bard, Lincoln, Nebraska, Paulette Loney and husband, Dean, Marshalltown, and Lynette Espeland, Hartley; one son, Kenneth Mersch, Eagle Grove; one brother, Clarence Kemna, Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Josephine Freyou, New Iberia, Louisiana; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Karen Sue Mersch; brothers, John, Joe, George, Frank, William, Charles, and Edward; and sisters, Mary, Beatrice, Matilda, Rosetta, and Bernadine.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 6, 1996, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with the Reverend John Paisley officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery at Eagle Grove. Willim Funeral Home, Eagle Grove, was in charge of arrangements.
