Pioneer Business Man

Mr. Noonan was a highly respected pioneer business man in Eagle Grove. The important dates of his business life in the community are not exactly known. Mr. Noonan was born in Eagle Grove on April 19, 1890 to Mr. and Mrs. Michael Patrick Noonan. He was one of six brothers. He attended Sacred Heart school and graduated from Sacred Heart high school in 1908. Prior to this, it is thought he started to work for the Boughton Jewelry when he was 13 years old in 1903. Following graduation from high school Mr. Noonan attended and graduated from a watch makers school in Omaha. Returning from this study he again went to work for the Boughton Jewelry.

Becomes Partner

He soon purchased an interest in the firm and the store was known as Boughton and Noonan. Later he purchased the Boughton interest and sold an interest to Fred Winslow. The store was known as Noonan and Winslow during this period until Mr. Noonan purchased the Winslow interest in about 1925. He operated the store alone then until 1947 when he sold an interest to his son Richard. This partnership lasted until 1952 when Richard entered another business venture in Montana. At this time Mr. Noonan retired and he and Richard sold the store to Richard Tomke and James Noonan. Although retired Mr. Noonan continued to come to the store daily and enjoyed retirement from his chair in the store.

In Present Location

The Boughton Jewelry was located in the building that now houses the Noonan-Tomke Jewelry and Mr. Noonan spent his entire business life in this building. During his long business life Mr. Noonan acquired a host of friends and business experiences becoming for a time a director of the First Liberty Savings Bank.
