John Herman Woodard was born May 8, 1872 to parents John and Mercy (Schoonover) Woodard and died Feb. 20, 1957 at the age of 81 years, 9 months, and 12 days. He was married to Rose Ann Wallin Oct. 12, 1892 in Woolstock and lived on the farm where he was born for many years. To this union three children were born, Herman of Albert Lea, Minn., Mrs. Grace Helmick of Clarion and Mrs. Thelma Matheson of Encinitos, Calif.

After farming for several years in Troy Twp. he moved to Eagle Grove in 1906 and later owned and operated the grocery store on Commercial Street. Mr. and Mrs. Woodard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 12, 1942 with open house and also observed their 55th anniversary in 1947.

Mrs. Woodard preceded him in death on Dec. 22, 1940. In July 1956 he sold his home in Eagle Grove and since Oct. has made his home with his daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Matheson in Encinitas, Calif. He is survived by his son, Herman Woodard of Albert Lea and daughters Mrs. Grace Helmick of Clarion and Mrs. Thelma Matheson of Encinitas, Calif, and five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death, Frank and Richard Woodard and two sisters Mrs. Sarah Porter and Mrs. Marion Fisher.
