Velma Irene Culmer was the oldest of six children born to Dallas Haymond Culmer and Ella Beshey Culmer. Velma was born August 10, 1903 near Woolstock, Iowa. She had three sisters, Florence, Hattie and Marion and two brothers, Lowell and Clyde. The family lived in Dows, Clarion and Iowa Falls where Dallas would work in grocery stores. In 1918, Ella's father, Frank L. Beshey gave the family a farm near Woolstock, Iowa. Velma lived with the family on the farm until 1923 when she moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Velma had many jobs in Des Moines; she worked as domestic help in private homes and later in housekeeping management in hotels in the Des Moines area. In 1943, she worked in Ungles Bakery in Des Moines and worked there until 1948. Velma met Earle Fadden through her sister Florence who had married Wesley Cleaveland. Wesley had been married to Earle's daughter who had died in a traffic accident. Wesley's children would call them Aunt Velma and Grandpa. Velma moved to Minnesota and married Earle Fadden on March 24, 1948. They ran a laundry for a time and later bought a Resort on Big Sandy Lake in the 1960's. Their later years were spent in Hamel, Minnesota. Earle passed away in 1973 at the age of 81. Velma passed away on July 10, 1987 at the age of 84. Velma shared Earle's large family but never had any children of her own.
