DEATH CLAIMS MRS. C.V. SMITH AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS
Mrs. C. V. Smith, a former Lake View resident, passed away in the early morning of Thursday, Dec. 2nd, 1926, at her home in Eagle Grove. Death came after a lingering illness accompanied by a great deal of suffering, which was patiently and uncomplainingly borne. In view of her condition the past several weeks, her relatives had been present at her bedside and were in a manner prepared for her demise, but nevertheless, they keenly feel their bereavement. Mrs. Smith was 60 years and 4 months of age.
Funeral services were held in the Foll & Wilson Funeral Parlors at Eagle Grove on Friday afternoon, with Rev. W. G. Muhleman of the M.E. church of that town officiating. The remains were brought to south Wall Lake Saturday on the Illinois Central and the funeral procession made its way to the Wall Lake cemetery, where the last rites were accorded the departed one. The services at the grave were in charge of the O.E.S. of Lake View, of which Mrs. Smith had been a member. Rev. J.E. Feller of the Methodist Episcopal church read the obituary and offered prayer. Pallbearers were the Messrs. Fred Wells, C.P. Armstrong, Jay C. Irwin, Frank Parkinson, Chas. Ferguson and A. Lille. Relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Waits, and children; Mr., and Mrs. Harry Rodman, daughter, Lily May and son Sammy; Mr. and Mrs. Vergil Rodman, of Sac City and Hurley Rodman, Albert Anderson, of Des Moines, the Smith's adopted son; Mrs. Mary Brooks, of Quitman, Mo., a niece of Mrs. Smith; Mrs. Lulu Curry, of Roseville, Ill., a cousin; Clayton Smith of Chicago, and Mrs. Joseph Connor of Oskaloosa, brother and sister, respectively, of Mr. Smith; John Dixon of Briggsvile, Ill., brother-in-law of Mrs. Smith; Mr. and Mrs. Si Stanzel and daughter, Lola of Sac City and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Cutty of Early.
Mrs. Smith has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for 40 years. Surviving are her husband, her adopted son, Albert Anderson, her brother, Harry Rodman of Lake View and her sister, Mrs. Chas. T. Waits, of Cedar Falls.
Lydia Emma Rodman was born August 2, 1866, at Biggsville, Ill. When 18 years of age, she moved with her parents to Quitman, Mo. On Nov. 20, 1885, she was united in marriage to Charles V. Smith, to whom she has been a faithful, loving companion. After their marriage, the Smiths went to Illinois, where for 18 years Mr. Smith was employed as telegrapher by the C.B.Q. Ry Company. They then changed their residence to Atlantic, Iowa, Mr. Smith being manager of the Postal Telegraph Office there for about three years.
In 1906, they moved to Lake View, Iowa where Mr. Smith maintained a partnership with his brother-in-law, C.T. Waits, in the Lake View Lumber Company for a number of years. After this partnership was dissolved, the Smiths moved onto the farm now owned by Jay C. Irwin east of town, Mr. Smith acting as manager for the then new Farmers Lumber Company for about two years. From here they moved to Lake City, where Mr. Smith conducted a variety store. In January of 1925, he sold out his interests there and moved to Eagle Grove, Iowa, where he engaged in the same line of business and where they have since resided.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith had no children of their own, but have given a home and loving care to five children at various times. Four of these were girls, one being the child of a relative, and who did not long survive. Albert Anderson, whom they took into their home and hearts while living in Lake View, has grown to splendid young manhood, and is repaying their kindness to him by giving up a good position in the registry department of the Des Moines post office to help his adopted father in the care of the store at Eagle Grove until such time as the business again can be wound up.
All that love could prompt was done for Mrs. Smith in her illness. Miss Lily Rodman of Lake View, a niece, had been in the Smith home for a number of weeks, and another niece, Miss Marylee Waits, of Cedar Falls, a trained nurse attended her in her last sickness. Her other relatives were present at her bedside and lovingly ministered to her in every possible way. While living in Lake View, Mrs. Smith made a large following of friends, who regret her passing and whose hearts go out in sympathy to those who are left to mourn her death.
