Harry Nelson, son of George and Elizabeth Nelson, was born on June 10, 1889 in Eagle Grove, Iowa, and passed from this life March 28, 1954 early in the morning at Des Moines. He grew up in this community and received his education in the Eagle Grove public schools. He was united in marriage to Fern Bowers, Conrad, Iowa, on May 3, 1918. To this union was born eight children, six of whom survive. They are Mrs. Phyllis Wobbeking, Dows, Iowa; Mrs. Nada Cloherty and Harry Nelson Jr., both of Cleveland, Ohio; William Nelson, Brighton, Colorado; Mrs. Mary Ann Flores of Clarion, Iowa, and Lee Donald at home.
Mr. Nelson hired out on the Chicago and Northwestern railroad on July 13, 1909. He was promoted to conductor five years later and continued in that capacity until his death. He was a member of the Order of Railroad Conductors Union. He enlisted in the United States army April 8th, 1918 serving as a corporal in the 31st Engineers and spent eleven months overseas. He was honorably discharged April 30th, 1919.
Mr. Nelson became a member of the Methodist church April 16, 1944. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Elizabeth, a brother Louis Harwood, and two sons Louis Harwood November 20, 1924, and Dale Edward, May 22,1946. Besides his wife and six surviving children, he also leaves to mourn, his two brothers Joe of Hector, Minnesota, and Dave of Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, two sisters Lillian Ackerman of this city, and Vinnie Shippey of Oak Park, Illinois, and 12 grandchildren.
Mr. Nelson loved his home and family and was a devoted husband and father and will be greatly missed but never-forgotten.
