September 23, 1899 --- January 8, 1996

Edith Augusta Rasmussen, 96, a longtime resident of Hampton, died Monday (Jan. 8, 1996) at her daughter's home in Florida. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Hungerford officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

Edith Augusta Rasmussen was born in Hankow, China, on Sept. 24, 1899, to Martha Spain and Peter Christian Pedersen. She returned to Denmark with her father after her mother's death. There she learned to knit and crochet when she was a child. She was an accomplished seamstress. She perfected these skills throughout her life and was known for her ability. She came to the United States when she was 17 years old. In Iowa, she met Hans Rasmussen. They were united in marriage on Nov. 24, 1917, Franklin County. Hans and Edith farmed in the Alexander area and then moved to Sheffield. They moved to Hampton in 1950 and lived the remainder of their lives there. Edith was an excellent cook and the coffee pot was always on. She took frequent trips to Denmark to visit friends and relatives there. She was proud of her heritage and continued to practice Danish customs in her home.

Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Rother of Tampa, Fla.; her daughter-in-law Dorothy Rasmussen; seven grandchildren, Janiece Renberg, Sue Rube, Kathy Brayton, Jennifer Dillon, Julee Nagel, Jill Nagel and Jed Nagel; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one stepsister in Denmark; one stepbrother in Scotland, and a special friend, Joan Coonley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hans, in 1986; her son, Earl in 1994; parents; and two stepbrothers.
