Walter McCormick was born on May 19, 1914, the son of Alfred and Minnie Pratt McCormick at Manchester, Iowa. He received his education in Troy Township Country School #2 in Wright County. He began fanning at age 13 to help his mother. He was united in marriage to Olga Amosson on April 17, 1940 at her parents home northeast of Goldfield. He enlisted into the United States Army on March 3, 1943 at Clarion. He received his training at Camp Roberts, Calif, before leaving the States for duty in Australia. By Wars-end, his Company was in Hiroshima, Japan and he witnessed first hand the destruction left behind from the bombing. Following his honorable discharge in December, 1945, he returned to Wright County. He and his wife have lived on the same farm since their marriage.
He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove and when able, would always act as usher for church services and funerals. He was also a member of the Eagle Grove VFW Post #642.
Walter McCormick died on Sunday, April 23,1995, at the Clarion Community Memorial Hospital at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 4 days. Survivors include his wife, Olga McCormick, Eagle Grove; sister-in-law, June Oren, Seattle, Wash.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Vera McCormick.
Funeral services for Walter McCormick were held on Thursday, April 25,1995 at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. The Reverend Omar Pettersen officiated the 2 p.m. service and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove, Iowa. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
