Joan Catherine Murphy Dockwell, was born April 16, 1938, to Hilary and Helen (Bosold) Murphy at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa. Joan grew up in Palo Alto County, receiving her education at Cylinder Consolidated School, graduating in 1954. Following graduation, Joan attended Estherville Community College. Joan completed her teaching degree through Drake University while teaching in Dows, Iowa. She taught fourth grade in Dows school system for eighteen years.

Joan was united in marriage to Larry Shillington at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. They made their home near Latimer, Iowa. She was active in Farm Bureau and loved caring for her flower gardens and yard. Joan was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, Iowa where she took care of the linens for many years. After moving to Emmetsburg, Joan was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Joan passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

She is survived by her sisters, Barbara Perkins of Chillicothe, Illinois and Mary (Carroll) Christianson of Emmetsburg, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.
