Eldon S. Newman, 74, of Woodhull, Ill., died Saturday April 17, 2004, in the Emergency Room at St. Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull. Burial is in the Woodhull Cemetery where graveside Military services will be conducted by the Miles S. Sturgeon American Legion Post No. 546. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home in Woodhull where memorials may be left to Bethany Lutheran Church.

He was born Nov. 28, 1929, in rural Cambridge a son of Swan Fredrick and Jennie Stewart Newman. He graduated from Orion High School and married Lucille E. Carlson Nov. 1, 1953, in Woodhull. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. Eldon farmed in the Lynn Center and Woodhull area for many years and was Feed Salesman for over 40 years with M & M Livestock Feed in Eagle Grove, Iowa. Early in his career he was employed at John Deere Wagon Works in Moline and he and his wife formerly owned and operated City Drug in McAllen, Texas.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, member and Master of the Woohull Masonic Lodge No. 502 AF & AM, Peoria Consistory, Miles S. Sturgeon American Legion Post No. 546 and the Henry County Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Woodhull Jaycees and he enjoyed bowling, golfing and had a special place in his heart for children.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; two daughters and a son-in-law Jayne Hartson, of Coal Valley, and Traci and Jamie Trapp, of Northbrook, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Kelly Newman, of Coal Valley; four grandchidren, Ashley Hartson, of Coal Valley, Jessica, Kevin and Kyle Trapp, of Northbrook; two sisters, Marjorie (Kenneth) Wongstrom, of Geneseo, Ill., and Roberta Little, of Geneseo; three brothers Howard (Donna) Newman, of Annawan, Ill., Dwayne (Barbara) Newman, of Lynn Center, Ill., and Raymond (Ruth Ann) Newman, of Osco, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Helen Cushman, Dorothy Carlson, and June Hoffmeier.
