Edward W. Swenson, 78, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville, Ark. He was born Nov. 7, 1925, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Hans Leonard Swenson and Tekla Matilda Swenson. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and in the Naval Reserve Chaplaincy for 25 years. He retired with the rank of commander. He was in the Lutheran Ministry for 49 years. He first served in Crystal Lake, Iowa; then the Ullensvang and Trinity Churches in Thor, Iowa; Trinity Lutheran Church in Ottawa, Ill., for 15 years; and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato, Minn., for 15 years. He moved to Bella Vista 12-1/2 years ago and had been active at the Bella Vista Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Laurie Swenson; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his wife of 51-1/2 years, Shirley Swenson; three sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy Swenson and Claire Swenson of Hastings, Minn., Walter Swenson and Anne Swenson of Oklahoma City, Okla., and John Swenson and Karen Swenson of Elysian, Minn.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Miriam Gustaf and Alan Gustaf of Bentonville, Ark.
Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Bella Vista Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Bella Vista Lutheran Church with Pastor Ronald Pfluger. Burial with military honors will be at the Bella Vista Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Bella Vista Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory.
