Marian Harrington Tokheim was born on September 26, 1930 in Brookfield, Missouri. Raised on the family farm, she graduated from Bucklin High School in 1948. Even at an early age, Marian had the gift of gentle compassion for others. In pursuit of this passion she obtained a nursing degree at Missouri Methodist Hospital in St Joseph, MO. She received a diploma in nursing in 1951. As part of her career of caring for others, she performed both private and hospital nursing duties in St Joseph and later Kansas City, MO.

On January 1, 1953, Marian married James Tokheim, in Bucklin Missouri. Jim and Marian were blessed with three children, Rodney James, Susan Dee, and Alan Paul. Marian continued her career briefly after marriage and then decided to devote her full attention to caring for their three children. The family followed Jim's career in the insurance industry taking them to several cities within the Midwest including; Fayette, IA, Lincoln, NE, Peoria, IL, Downers Grove, IL. Jim's career finally brought the family to DeWitt, IA where all three children graduated high school.

In 1969 Marian returned to her nursing career at Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital in Clinton. She later assumed the role of Nursing Director at Bluff Terrace long term care center.

In 1988 both Jim & Marian ended their professional careers and enjoyed many years of retirement returning to Kansas City, MO. In 1996 they relocated to Strawberry Point to spend some time closer to the grandchildren. In 2004 they once again relocated to Des Moines, IA to enjoy their youngest grandchildren.

Marian died December 19, 2015 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Preceded in death by her mother and father Pearl and Raymond Harrington of Bucklin, MO and brother Harold Harrington of Bucklin, MO. She is survived by son Rod and wife Deb Tokheim of Clinton, IA; daughter Sue and husband Joe Cahill of Austin, TX; son Al and wife Leah Tokheim of Johnston, IA. Grandchildren include, Branden, Collin, Christian, Michelle, Ben, Davis and great grandson Parker. Additional surviving family members include sister Evelyn Rulon of Pacific, MO. Marian was preceded in death by her husband, James.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Iles Westover Chapel where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. A graveside service will begin 2:30 p.m., Wednesday at East Ullensvang Cemetery in Thor, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to The Gardens at Luther Park, Des Moines, IA or St Stephen Lutheran Church Urbandale, IA.
