Willis R. Varland, 71, of Delwood Road, a computer operator with Capitol Records, Los Angeles, for 13 years before retiring 10 years ago, died Tuesday at Miriam Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Elaine M. (Slater) Varland.

Born in Sisseton, S.D., a son of the late Walter and Ruby (Marvick) Varland, he had lived in Warwick for 10 years after moving there from Hawthorne, Calif. Besides his wife he leaves a stepmother, Cora O. (Brown) Varland of Eagle Grove, Iowa; a daughter, Christina C. Varland of Warwick; three brothers, Curtis and Walter Varland, both of Cincinnati, Ohio, and David Varland of Eagle Grove.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. from the Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a service in Trinity Episcopal Church, Ocean Avenue, Cranston, at 9. Burial will be in Pawtuxet Memorial Park.
