Ruby Paine, 97, of 700 Trouble Creek Road, New Port Richey, died Monday (Oct. 10, 1988) at Tarpon General Hospital. Born in Chicago, she came here 20 years ago from Eagle Grove, Iowa, and was a retired voice and music teacher. She was a Methodist. Survivors include two nephews, Sherwood DeForest, Coraopolis, Pa., and Jack DeForest, Detroit; and a niece, Frances Cowan, Eagle Grove. Arlington Funeral Home, Port Richey.

Ruby De Forest was born June 28, 1891, the daughter of Frank and Rosa Lockhart De Forest, at Cissna Grove, Ill. She attended school in Dows, Iowa, and graduated from Dows High School. Ruby received her degree in music and English from the University of Iowa and came to the Eagle Grove High School to teach.

While in Eagle Grove, she met and married Harry W. Paine, a partner in the Smith-Paine garage. The couple moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where Harry received an advanced degree in mechanical engineering, and PHD from the University of Michigan. The couple moved to Toledo, Ohio, where he was on the faculty of Toledo University. During this time, Ruby taught music in high school. They later moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where Harry was the head of the vocational education department of the University of Cincinnati, and she taught music there.

The Paines moved to Panama and Brazil after retirement where she taught English before returning to Salisbury, Md., where Mr. Paine taught mathematics in the Community College. They retired to Florida, where Mr. Paine died in 1976. The Paines had established educational scholarships for Eagle Grove students for study of education.

Ruby Paine was living in a nursing home in Florida until entering the Tarpon Springs General Hospital. Ruby Paine died there on October 10, 1988 at the age of 97 years, three months, and 12 days.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, George De Forest, and Ray De Forest; and a sister, Gertrude Baugh.
She is survived by two nephews, Sherwood De Forest, Corapolis, Pa.; Jack DeForest, Monroe, Ohio; two nieces, Mrs. Marlow (Frances) Cowan, Ankeny, Iowa; Shirley Van Hoy, Chase City, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Clara De Forest, Monroe, Ohio.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 15 at 10:30 a m. at the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Scott C. Hall officiated, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove, Iowa. Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
