Lyman Richard Sheriff was born May 2, 1907 at Mason City, Iowa, the son of James [Sheriff] and Louise Prudence Walsh. The family moved to Eagle Grove when he was two, and he grew up in Eagle Grove, and received his education here. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1942. He was united in marriage to Beulah Fern Wilcox, of Woolstock, in 1942, at Minneapolis, Mn. They made their home in Eagle Grove.

Lyman worked a few years for the City of Eagle Grove. In 1943, he began employment with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, becoming a brakeman, and retiring in 1972. After his retirement he was a part-time night watchman for the Umthun Trucking Co., retiring from this because of his health.

Lyman died at his home in Eagle Grove, on Saturday, June 19, at the age of 75 years, one month and 17 days. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. James (Kay) McFadden, Fort Dodge, Iowa, and three grandchildren. Also surviving, is a nephew, Donald Sheriff, of Sweet Springs, Mo., who was raised by Lyman and Beulah. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ward Sheriff, one step-brother, Paul Butterfield, and one granddaughter.

Funeral services were held on June 22, 1982 at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home. Dr. Lloyd W. Meyer, Church of the Open Bible, officiated at the 2 p.m. service, and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Military rites were provided by the Clarence Shurtz American Legion Post of Eagle Grove, Ia.
