News reached Eagle Grove Monday afternoon that a sad accident had befallen Wesley Laux at Jewell at about 1:30 o'clock, and the community was shocked upon learning of his death Tuesday morning at 6:10. Wesley was with the supply car of the store department of the Northwestern and at Jewel, in getting onto the car, he fell in some way and was run over by the wheels. His left foot and leg up to the knee was crushed, and he also evidently received internal injuries. He was taken into the depot at Jewel and at 6 o'clock he was brought home on a special. Drs. McGrath, Morse, and McNaughton amputated the member just below the knee, but he never rallied from the operation and breathed his last at 6:10 the next morning.
Wesley was a young man of sixteen, a bright and industrious lad and was thought well of by all who knew him. A sadder death has not occurred in Eagle Grove for a long time. Mr. Laux is one of the train dispatchers and is one of the trusted men of the Northwestern. The family have the sympathy of everybody in this sad hour.
The funeral will be held in the Methodist church at 2 o'clock tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon.
EAGLE GROVE EAGLE -- Eagle Grove, Iowa
October 22, 1902*****
Tuesday morning about six o'clock occurred the death of Wesley Laux, at the home of his parents on W. Broadway. Wesley Leland Laux was born in Omaha, Nebraska, May 2, 1886, making him 16 years, 6 months and 19 days old. He had always made Omaha his home until about three years ago when he moved with his parents to this city.It was just a week ago that Wesley commenced to work in the store department of the C. & N. W. and was on the road distributing the supplies at Jewell, when the sad accident happened to him. He attempted to board a moving way car, made a misstep and foil underneath the wheels, crushing his left foot and leg and being injured internally. Medical aid was immediately summoned and he was brought to this city in a special coach that evening.
The sympathy of the entire community goes to the grief stricken parents. The son, just starting out in life, to be taken away so suddenly by the hand of Death, is one of the saddest things imaginable in the walk of Life. Wesley was a bright boy, always a favorite among his companions and his place among them will be hard to fill.
