George LeRoy Babcock, the son of George and Mahala (Gatliff) Babcock, was born October 4, 1928, in Dougherty, Iowa, in Cerro Gordo County. He was raised and educated in the area and graduated from Eagle Grove High School with the class of 1946. He served in the United States Army, attended Eagle Grove Junior College, and received his Mortuary degree in St. Louis, Missouri. On December 26, 1947, LeRoy was united in marriage with Helen Thompson at the United Church of Christ parsonage in Clarion. The couple made their home in St. Louis, Ottumwa, and Algona before moving to Eagle Grove in 1958. LeRoy worked for Kastler Funeral Home and purchased it in 1965. He owned and operated Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home from 1965 until his retirement.

LeRoy was an active member of the Eagle Grove United Methodist Church, and past member of the Lions Club, and served on the Eagle Grove City Council. LeRoy passed away on Helen’s birthday, Thursday, October 15, 2015, at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, at the age 87 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; two daughters, Vicki Lynne and Gaye Lynne; sisters, Marie Brauman, Mae Johnson, Mildred “Billie” Babcock, Millie Iehl, Doris Ernst, and infant sister, Beverly Jean Babcock; brother, Marvin Babcock; and grandson, Quincy Babcock. Survivors include four children: George Babcock, Kim Hamrick and husband, Mike, Sheila Dunn and husband, Tom, Jeb Babcock and wife, Karen; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Hill; brother, Lou “Bub” Babcock; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Private burial will be held on Thursday. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Foust Funeral Homes of Eagle Grove is in charge of arrangements.
