April 18, 1899 -- January 23, 1986

Funeral services for Harvey O. Nichtern, 86, of Estherville, were held Monday, Jan. 27, 1986, 11 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, in Estherville, with Rev. Paul Wiegman officiating. Mr. Nichtern died Thursday, Jan. 23, 1986 at the Rosewood Manor Nursing Home, in Estherville. Pauline Johnson, organist, accompanied Wayne Jacobson, soloist, as he sang "Welcome Home Children" and "How Great Thou Art" and as the congregation sang "Rock Of Ages" and "Abide With Me." Pallbearers were Kenneth Kaltved, Ed Otis, Bill Weir, Gene Weir, Terry Weir and Steve Woodley. Interment was in the East Lawn Memorial Cemetery, in Algona.

Harvey Owen Nichtern, the son of John and Marquerite McFarland Nichtern, was born April 18, 1899 in Eagle Grove. He received his education in the Eagle Grove schools. On July 29, 1919 he married Anna Carney in Estherville. The couple farmed in the Ringsted and Wallingford areas. Mrs. Nichtern died in 1960 and he moved to Spencer in 1961 and to Estherville in 1981. Mr. Nichtern attended the Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leland (Ruth) Knudtson of Spirit Lake and Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Weir of Emmetsburg; nine grandchildren;
29 grandchildren; two brothers, Horace Nichtern of Shoshoni, Wyo. and Vernon Nichtern of Riverton, Wyo; four sisters, Mable Groughan of Harding, Mont., Vera Ihrke of Annandale, Minn., and Cora Hovden of St. James, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, one great grandchild, his parents, one sister and three brothers.
