Vera Hazel Erland, the daughter of Edward and Serena Olson Pohlmann, was born on March 18, 1913 at Eagle Grove, Iowa. She grew up in Eagle Grove and graduated from the Eagle Grove High School in 1932. For several years, she was a bookkeeper at the Schoonover Grocery Store. On July 20, 1941, she was united in marriage with Ruben C. Erland at Eagle Grove. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove and she was a dental assistant for Drs. Val Zwol and Patterson and later for Dr. Patterson's dental office.

She retired in 1975. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a long-time member of the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. She died on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6, 1985, of multiple injuries received in an auto accident near Brush, Colo. She attained the age of 71 years, 9 months and 18 days.

She is survived by her husband, Ruben C. Erland of Eagle Grove; her son, Michael Erland of Evans, Colo.; her daughter, Mary, Mrs. Douglas Derscheid of Colo, Iowa; 4 grandchildren, Pamela and Tricia Erland, Kimberly and Kelly Derscheid; a great-grandchild; Terri Erland; a brother, David Pohlmann of Boulder, Colo. ; four sisters, Mrs. Vivian Jackson of Aurora, Colo.; Mrs. Maxine Nelson of GlenEllyn, Ill.; Mrs Dolores Mallon of Chicago; and Mary Jo, Mrs. Charles Marini of Warren, Mich and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ruben (Vera) Erland, age 71 of Eagle Grove, were held on Thurs., Jan 10, 1985 at 2 p.m. at the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church. Rev. Paul Schaedig, church pastor, officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held on Wednesday at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home.
