Frederick Wilhelm Reil was born March 20, 1907, in Nienburg, Germany, the son of Johann and Arntja Stumpe Reil. He served an apprenticeship in cabinet making in Germany, coming to America at age l8. He worked in Grundy Center and Waterloo as a cabinetmaker. Fred became a U.S. citizen in 1931. He was united in marriage to Prudence Stoyles of Waterloo on Oct. 11, 1931, at Waterloo, where he worked as assistant manager for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for the state of Iowa. Fred entered the Army in 1943 and served until 1945 in the European Theater of Operations. He owned and operated a hotel in Platteville, Wisc. from 1946 to 1948, and from 1948 to 1950 operated a hotel in Strawberry Point, Iowa, before coming to Eagle Grove in 1950 to enter into a partnership with Tom Neesen in the Neesen-Reil Clothing Store, later operating the store by himself. He sold the store to Kenneth Spangler in 1973, but continued doing the bookkeeping at the store, until retiring for good in 1987.

Fred suffered a heart attack in Lompoc, Calif, on December 21 and died in the Lompoc District Hospital, Lompoc, on December 25, 1993 at the age of 86 years, nine months and five days. He is survived by his wife, Prudence of Eagle Grove; son, John Reil, Lompoc, Calif., and daughter Margaret (Mrs. John) Sundberg, Eagle Grove. Also, four grandchildren: Mark and Jill Sundberg and Brandon and Robert Reil; two nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Ben Reil, and one sister, Hilda Tonjes.

Fred was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove Lions Club, American Legion, and the Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce.

Funeral services for Fred W. Reil, 86, were held at 10:30 a.m: Thursday, Dec. 30, 1993 in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Lyle Peters officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Military rites at the grave were conducted by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Eagle Grove Posts. Kastler-Babcock Services were in charge of arrangements.
