John L. Smith was born on August 22, 1943, in Belmond, Iowa, to Lester "Shorty" and Lillian McAlpine Smith. He was married to Vicky Boyington on November 27, 1961, in Rowan, Iowa. He was an active member of the "Iowa River Riders," a snowmobiling club, a board member of the Dows Golf Course, a former Rowan City Councilman, former Lions Club member, and a member of the "Rowan Coffee Club." He was the homebase for his snowmobiling club. He was a proud member of the last graduating class of Rowan High School. He farmed in the Rowan and Riceville areas, drove school bus for the Rowan School District, and was a longtime salesman for the John Deere Implement Company. Of late, he was a top Crop Insurance salesman, owning his own agency, Smith Insurance Agency.

John L. Smith died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the age of 57. He is survived by his children, Terri Avery and husband, James, Clarion, Iowa, Tammi Smith and Ryan George, Clarion, Timothy Smith and wife, Vanessa, Clarion; the children's mother, Vicki Boyington; two brothers, James Smith, and wife, Judy, Belmond, Iowa, and Mike Smith, and wife, Charlene, Rowan; one sister, Jeannine Hiemstra and husband, David, Clarion; four grandchildren; nephews and nieces; and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were held Sunday, March 4, 2001, at the United Church of Rowan at 2 p.m. Burial was held at the Graceland Cemetery in Rowan. Willim Funeral Home of Clarion was in charge of arrangements.
