The Reverend Kenneth R. Torvik was born August 25, 1903, at Great Falls, Montana, a twin. At an early age, The Reverend Torvik moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where he received his public school training. He had four brothers and one sister. The Rev. Torvik attended St. Olaf College at Northfield, Minn., and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Augsburg College at Minneapolis. He also attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis; Biblical Seminary in New York; and Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. Pastor Torvik graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in 1929. He was ordained June 2, 1929, in Minneapolis. This same month, he was united in marriage to Alma Hanson, who passed away in 1962. While Mr. Torvik was a college student, he served at First Lutheran Church in El Campo, Texas, for fifteen months. From 1929 - 1931, Pastor Torvik served the parishes of Immanuel Lutheran and Bethany Lutheran Churches at Suttons Bay, Mich.; from 1931 - 1938: Trinity Lutheran Church, West Hempstead, N. Y.; from 1938 - 1945: First Lutheran Church Portland, Maine; from 1945 - 1949: Holmen Lutheran Church, Halfway Creek Lutheran Church, Lewis Valley Lutheran Church, Holmen, Wis.; from 1949 - 1964: Evangelical Lutheran Church, Eagle Grove, Iowa;, from 1964 - 1966: Director of Ewalu Bible Camp, Strawberry Point, Iowa; and from 1966 - 1973: Fulton Lutheran Church, Roelyn, Moorland, Iowa.

Pastor Torvik held various offices in the Eagle Grove Circuit, which became the Fort Dodge Conference of the Iowa District of the American Lutheran Church. He also served on the Board of Regents of Waldorf College for a number of years. He also served as secretary of the Fort Dodge Area Lutheran Pastors Association.

The Reverend Kenneth Torvik was married September 13, 1964, to Miss Ovedeia Pederson of Eagle Grove. The Reverend and Mrs. Torvik retired July of 1973 and moved to their home at 1004 SW 1st Street. During this time, he kept busy preaching in many churches. Also, he worked in his garden and with his flowers. They did a lot of traveling and kept busy at all times. In March of 1988, they moved to the Rotary Ann Home. His wife died on December 26, 1996. The Reverend Kenneth R. Torvik died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, at Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove, at the age of 97. He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Butters, and husband, Robert, Watertown, S. D.; one son, Daniel, Memphis, Tenn; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at 1:30 p.m., at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with the Reverends Paul
and Susan Stone officiating. Burial was held in the East Ullensvang Cemetery at Thor, Iowa. Willim Funeral Home of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
