Andrew Hiram Berkland was born January 5, 1912, the son of Andrew and Belle Berkland at Thor. He attended Thor elementary school, and his freshman and sophomore years at Eagle Grove High School. He attended the Goldfield High School during his junior and senior years, and graduated from Goldfield High School. He was united in marriage to Mabel Gangestad of Goldfield November 27, 1935 at Des Moines. The couple returned to the Thor area where he worked as a self-employed trucker-fertilizer salesman. He later retired in 1981.

Andrew Berkland died at Trinity Regional Hospital November 10, 1987 after an extended illness at the age of 75 years, ten months, and five days. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Nellie Anderson and Marie Rae. He is survived by his wife, Mabel, one, son, Rev. Gary L. Berkland, Morgan Hill, Calif.; one daughter, Judy Berkland, Fort Dodge; and four grandchildren, Erik, Diane, Kirk, and Jon.

Funeral services were held Friday, November 13, 1987, at 1 p.m.. at the Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with burial in Norway Lake Cemetery, Thor. The Rev. John Sersland officiated at the afternoon services.
