THOR - Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 16th, 2015, at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor with Pastor Darryl Landsverk officiating. Visitation is Tuesday, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Blossom Hill Cemetery near Badger.

Merlin Lewis Fischer, the son of Emil and Vernis (Mundt) Fischer, was born November 16, 1923, on a farm near Rockwell, Iowa. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Louis and Sophia Mundt. Merlin graduated from Rockwell High School in 1941 before serving in the United States Navy on the LCI-G471 in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He returned to the States enrolling at the Iowa State Teachers College where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in 1950 and his Master's Degree in 1960.

On June 10, 1951, Merlin was united marriage to Marlys Sheldon at Ullensvang Lutheran Church in Thor. He taught school in McGregor, Ventura and Eagle Grove. They made their home on Marlys' family farm near Thor where he also farmed. In 1966, Merlin became the first department head of Mathematics at Iowa Central Community College, retiring in 1987, but continued to farm for a few more years.

Merlin was a member of Ullensvang Lutheran Church, Thor Commercial Club, the V.F.W. in Eagle Grove and served as president of the Thor Lions Club. He was an exceptional carpenter and electrician and loved deer hunting and fishing.

Merlin passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove at the age of 91 years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents and a brother, Richard Fischer. Survivors include his wife, Marlys Fischer of Thor; son, Marlin Fischer of Huntsville, Alabama; daughter, Marla (Wally) Lorenzen of Eagle Grove and a brother, Bob (Sharon) Fischer of San Antonio, Texas. Memorials may be left to Ullensvang Lutheran Church or Dollars for Scholars in Eagle Grove.
