WEST DES MOINES, IA -- Emma L. Appelhons, 92, of West Des Moines, formerly of Thompson, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Fountain West Health Center, West Des Moines. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Lynn J. Noel officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 12 noon until service time. Burial will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson, Iowa. Family suggest memorials be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, 183 – 2nd Avenue E., Thompson, IA 50478.

Emma L. Appelhons was born Oct. 26, 1922, rural Kanawha, Iowa, to John and Jennie (Abbas) Baker. She was second to the youngest of five brothers and five sisters. Emma was united in marriage to Staff Sgt. John T. Appelhons on July 7, 1941 at Blue Earth, Minnesota. After John was discharged from the Army in 1945, John and Emma farmed in the Britt and Crystal Lake areas, moving to Thompson in 1956. In 1975, John retired from active farming, but continued to work with Emma in the Westside Upholstery Shop which she opened in 1965, and continued to operate until 2000. After John passed away in 2004, Emma continued to reside in Thompson until October 2010, when she moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, to be near her son Dennis, her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Dennis (Lois) Appelhons, Urbandale, Iowa; David (Laurie Montag) Appelhons, Emmetsburg, Iowa; granddaughters Lori (Brian) Weckman, New Virginia, Iowa, Beth (Michael) Mitchell, Urbandale, Iowa, Lisa Thompson, Waukee, Iowa, and Amanda Appelhons, Des Moines, Iowa, and great-grandchildren Aidan and Cole Weckman, Daniel, Elizabeth and Thomas Mitchell, and Hadlei and Harper Thompson. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Joe (Donna) Appelhons, Britt, Iowa, and former daughter-in-law Barb (Butch) Thomsen, Adel, Iowa, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
