Funeral services for Phyllis Vanette Schlagel, 45, of Dows, will be held at 11:00 am today, Thurs., July 2, 1992 from the First Presbyterian Church in Dows. Stanley Watne will officiate and burial will be in the Galt cemetery. The Elledge Funeral Home of Dows is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Robert Larson will be the organist. Casket bearers are Kelly Leidholm, John and Chris Paulin, Dustin and Doug Schlagel and Van C. Schroder. Phyllis died unexpectedly at her home Sunday, June 28, 1992 of an apparent stroke. She was born on a farm near Sumner, IA on Sept. 17, 1946 to Van and Alyce Schwieger Schroder. At an early age the family returned to Dows where she met Phillip Schlagel and on Dec. 16, 1962 they were married at Fort Dodge, IA. Their early years of marriage were spent in Gary, IN where Phyllis completed her high school education and graduated in 1965. She then attended classes at Purdue University, Calumet campus. She was later employed by the Inland Steel Co. of Indiana and also worked as a teacher's aide. In July of 1972 the family returned to Dows and Phyllis worked as an Avon lady and later worked in Clarion and Belmond. In January of 1981 she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis which limited her activities. Phyllis is survived by her father, Van Schroder of Galt; her husband, Phillip of Dows; one son, Steven of Dows; one daughter, Susan (Mrs. Robert) Waters of Dows; and two grandchildren, Levi and Lexi. Also surviving are two sisters, Andrea Knudson of Monticello, GA and Colleen (Mrs. Thomas) Paulin of Elkader, IA; and one brother, Mitchell Schroder of Lehigh, IA.
