N. Christine 'Chris' Veeder, age 87, of Boone and the Eastern Star Masonic Home, died April 18, 2015, at the Eastern Star Home. She has been cremated. A graveside service and burial will be Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. in the Linwood Park Cemetery with Rev. Dan Solomon officiating. Following the graveside service, a Memorial Service will be at 11:00 a.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church on May 30th. Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall on Friday, May 29, 2015, from 4 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m.

Chris was born September 27, 1927, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Nils Frederick and Ragna (Ulseth) Halvorsen. She graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit in 1945 and later, graduated from Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa. She and Daniel L. Veeder were married in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on January 22, 1950. They lived in Belmond, Iowa, until 1953 when they moved to Boone. After holding various part-time jobs when her children were small, Chris became the first fulltime church secretary at Augustana Lutheran Church. Chris was then Executive Secretary of United Fund of Boone before becoming the first woman to be Boone City Assessor in 1976, a post she held until retiring in 1987. She took part in numerous volunteer activities before and after retirement. Chris served on the Augustana church council as its first female member. She was involved in the Augustana women's group, Church Women United, Soroptimists, and the United Way. She was a tireless volunteer at the Erickson Public Library. Chris was a member of the American Business Women's Association and a guide at Mamie Eisenhower's Birthplace. She was the first to log over 10,000 volunteer hours with the Boone County Hospital Auxiliary, in which she held nearly every office and served in nearly every branch, and edited its semiannual publication "The Voice." Chris was frequently an officer in her various volunteer groups.

Chris loved having friends over, and annually baked hundreds of cookies for her Christmas tea and for her family. She traveled to Europe four times, once alone, and visited relatives in Norway each time. Both of her parents were from Norway. Chris researched and typed a complete genealogy for both the Veeder and Halvorsen sides of her family. She made copies and mailed them out to all her children, nieces, and nephews. Her hobbies included needlepoint and she loved reading, especially Jane Austin novels.

Chris is survived by her husband, Dan, of the Eastern Star Masonic Home; brother Howard Halvorsen of Rochester, Minnesota; daughter Corrine "Corky" (Toby) Anderson of Boone; sons Grant (Kim) Veeder of Waterloo and Mitch (Jayne) Veeder of Montgomery, Texas; grandchildren Toby (Heather) Anderson, Brooke (Romy) Ricafort, Jenna Anderson (companion Lenny Solis), Ryan Veeder, Sean Veeder, Lydia Veeder (companion Brad Vogel) and Kelsey Veeder (companion Bryce Coon); and great-grandchildren Tori Anderson, Ryder Ricafort, and Audrey Ricafort. She was preceded in death by her parents. In memory of Chris, memorials may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church or the Waldorf College Library or Choir.
