Richard Merlin Floy was born March 27, 1938, at Wonewoc, Wisconsin, to Merlin Carl and Adeline (Pesik) Floy. The family returned to Thornton, Iowa, where his father was from. Richard attended school at Thornton and graduated from Thornton High School in 1956. On Nov. 28, 1959, Richard was united in marriage with Karen Kay Dannewitz at St. Francis Church in Belmond. The couple moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 1960 where their children, Kristy Ann and Lance Richard were born.

Richard worked as manager of the milk bottling plant for Cow Palace Dairy on Baseline Road, Tempe, Arizona. In 1963, he decided to return to Thornton and go into the farm drainage business with his dad who started the business in 1947. He and his son Lance now run the business. Following the tradition of his grandfather, Carl Floy, who went to Leech Lake, Walker, Minnesota, at age 16, Richard and his family spend time each summer at their house-boat at Moonlight Bay, Walker, Minnesota. He loved that his children and grandchildren enjoyed it as much as he did.

Richard loved going to Valley, Wisconsin, where the Pesik family had a reunion in August each year. He loved his Wisconsin relatives. Richard loved to work, fish, dance, but most of all his family. He is a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years: Karen; daughter: Kristy (Curt) Holt; son: Lance (Lana) Floy; granddaughters: Stephanie (Shawn) Hohenzy; Shanna Floy (friend Caleb); Alesha (Logan) Wiegmann; Kelsey (Tate) Lage, Anna Keehn (friend Dale); Makenzie Keehn; step-grandchildren: Jessica Holt and Jeremiah Daniel Holt; mother Adeline Floy; sisters: Rose (Jerry) Wilson; Betty (Dennis) Meyer; Arlene (Doug) Cahalan; Diana Davidson (friend HT); Teri (Paul) Koenck; and many nieces and nephews. Richard is preceded in death by his father: Merlin; grandparents: Carl and Etta Floy and Rudy and Elizabeth Pesik; in-laws: Danny and Irene Dannewitz; brother-in-law: Jerry (Duke) Suntken. The family requests casual dress per Richard's wish. Retz Funeral Home.
