March 8, 1870 -- September 27, 1939

Ellen Marie Matsen was born to the parent Hans and Anna Matsen on March 8, 1870, in Denmark, and died at her home, S. Lucas Ave., in Eagle Grove, Sept. 27, 1939, age 69 years, 6 months and 19 days. She was baptized unto Christ, received instruction, and confessed her Christian faith in her youth. In 1887 she came to America, to Gibson City, Ill., where she was united in marriage to Nels Christiansen in 1890. Mr. and Mrs. Christiansen lived in Gibson City for three years and in 1893 they came to Hardy, Iowa,, where they lived for a period of eight years. In 1901 they moved to near Hawarden, and in 1934 they retired into Eagle Grove which has since, been their home. Mrs. Christiansen is now survived by her husband and by seven children: 5 daughters and 2 sons. They are Mrs. Margaret Johnson, Racine, Wis,. Mrs. Lena Peterson, Eagle Grove, Mrs. Serena Meiers, Gladbrook, Mrs. Emma Linn, Lowden, Mrs. Lauretta Hesse, Dixon, Elmer Christiansen, Pocahontas, and Harry Christiansen, Hawarden. Three daughters have preceded her in death. They are Mrs. Mamie Searls, Akron, Mrs. Ruby Nielsen, Chatsworth, and Mrs. Dorothy Anderson, Hawarden. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren and by three brothers. They are Hans Matsen and Lawrence Matsen, both of Foosland, Ill., and Nels Matsen of Graettinger. And also by a large number of relatives and friends.

Mrs. Christensen was a kind and considerate personality. She was very quiet and peaceable, of a rather retiring nature. She was a kind wife and mother. For the last years her health gradually failed, until she passed away, though somewhat suddenly on Wednesday September 27th. Funeral services were held Monday October 2nd from the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church and burial was made in Rose Hill cemetery.
