May 11, 1855 --- February 8, 1909

Mrs. M. C. [Manley C.] Brown was suddenly taken sick last Monday night (February 8th) about eleven o'clock and died in a ten minutes. Mrs. Brown was feeling quite well Monday doing a big days work, retiring for the night about eleven o'clock. Soon after retiring she complained and arising took a chair and called her husband who immediately sent for a physician but she passed away in the chair before aid arrived.

The two sons, Clark and Shirley, who are living in Des Moines, were notified early Tuesday morning but on account of the blockade of the railroads could not get here until Wednesday. Short funeral services were held at the home this Thursday noon and the burial will be at Humboldt, their former home and where other members of the family are buried.

Besides the husband, the two sons, and one daughter, Grace, are left to mourn for the wife and mother. Mr. and Mrs. Brown have lived in Rolfe for fifteen years or more and have many friends who sympathize with the family in their sorrow.

The body of Mrs. Brown with a large escort of the order of Eastern Star, the surviving husband, sons, and daughter were brought east on the Thursday afternoon C. & N. W. train which was stopped at the Airline crossing east of Union Cemetery. The party was met there by carriages from Humboldt and conveyed to the cemetery where with the concluding rites of the O.E.S. beautiful ritual the body was consigned to the grave. The funeral party consisting of some fifty all told were brought to town and later to the C. & N.W. freight west in the evening. Mrs. Brown was long a resident in Dakota City, Humboldt, and Thor in this county and held the respect and good will of a large circle of friends here.

She was a daughter of C. W. Weston of Fort Dodge who was a well known miller at one time in Humboldt, Dakota and Fort Dodge, and was born and grew to womanhood in that city. A large number of her old friends wherever she has lived will extend heartfelt sympathy to the bereaving family in their almost irreparable loss.

Card of Thanks. We desire to thank all our Humboldt friends for their kindness and attention to us at the time of the funeral of our dear wife and mother. We surely appreciate it.
M. C. Brown and Family, Rolfe, Iowa.
