April 20, 1904 --- January 11, 1992

Rev. Hensmann A. Smidt, 87, of Smithland, Iowa, died Saturday, January 11, 1992, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Whiting. He was born April 20, 1904, on a farm near Kanawha, Iowa, the sixth son of Hensmann Henry and Ann (Johnson) Smidt. After working at home and later as a hired farm hand, he decided to further his education. He attended the Mission House in Wisconsin and graduated from high school at Pleasant Prairie Academy in German Valley, Illinois. He attended Pella College in Pella, Iowa for one year. On August 27, 1930 he married Margaret Toomsen in Forreston, Illinois. In 1933, he graduated from the University of Dubuque with a bachelor's degree. He graduated from the Seminary of Dubuque in 1935 with a B.D. degree and was ordained a Presbyterian minister by the Presbytery of George in Breda. Iowa. He served churches at Emery and Avon, South Dakota, Breda, George, Andrew, Burt, Rudd, Cotter and Salem Presbyterian churches. He retired in 1969 and moved to Smithland, where he served the Rodney and Smithland churches from 1970 to 1974.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; 1 son, the Rev. H. John and his wife, Lavada, of Parker, Colorado; 1 daughter, Nelta, and her husband, Anthony Tompkins of Smithland; 2 sisters, Angeling DeVies of Austinville, Iowa, and Anna Hoffman of Ackley, Iowa; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, 1992, at the United Methodist Church at Smithland with Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Mrs. Ellen Harbeck, organist, accompanied Mr. Jack Steinhoff in the selections. "I've Found A Friend" and "Nearer My God To Thee". The congregation sang, "God Will Take Care Of You". Bearers were Donald Forney, Tim Corbin, David Barngrover, Gene Kelsey, Wilfred Uhl and Chester Claus. Honorary Bearers were Oscar Hanson, Carl Callaghan. Leo Stickney, Calvin Servis, Charles Corbin, Keith Johnson, James Cleveland, Earl Hines and Myron Armour. Interment was in the Little Sioux Township Cemetery at Smithland with arrangements by the Willman Funeral Home, Rodney, Iowa.
