June 16, 1916 --- March 9, 2015

Dale LeRoy Hauge, 98, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2015, surrounded by his loving family. Until entering the Belmond Health Care Center a few months ago he lived an active, vibrant life. His engaging smile, youthful spirit and quick wit endeared him to all who knew him.

Dale was born on June 16, 1916, on the family farm northwest of Belmond. He was the youngest of eight children born to Lewis and Mary (Norby) Hauge. He graduated from Belmond High School in 1934. He married Velma Braner on June 28, 1941, and together they raised their family of four on a farm east of Belmond. Dale personified the bedrock character of a native Iowan. He was a hard worker, loved his family, neighbors, church and community. In addition to farming he sold hail insurance and was a Farmers Mutual Hail adjuster for more than twenty years. Dale was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, was Vice President and also President of the congregation. Dale was very proud of his family and enjoyed traveling to visit them. Since his children and grandchildren lived all over the country he visited many different states including Hawaii and Alaska. He loved the outdoors, hunting and especially his annual fishing trips to northern Minnesota. He was a great bridge player and an avid gardener who in 2010 proudly showed off his 10 pound muskmelon to the Belmond Independent photographer. He was also a consistent golfer who at 95 gave golf lessons to his daughters and granddaughters at the Belmond Country Club. His family and friends will dearly miss this loving, kind, generous and caring man.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma, and son, Paul. He is survived by his children Dennis Hauge of Belmond, Linda Shaw of Somers, NY and Jean McMillin of Renton, WA. Grandchildren include Kim Laidlaw of Moretown, VT, Trent Hauge of Indianola, IA, Emily Shaw of Bethesda, MD, Laura Shaw of Jackson, WY and Corey McMillin of Newcastle, WA. Great-grandchildren are Liam, Lucy and Jack Laidlaw of Moretown, VT. Visitation will be Thursday, March 12th from 5:00 – 7:00 at the Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.
