Frederick Herman Hammer was born July 16, 1875 in Island Grove township, Effingham County, Illinois. He was the son of Louis Hammer and Elvina Tech Hammer. He lived in Illinois until 1883. He then moved with his parents to Wright county, Iowa and lived there until 1892, when they moved to Buena Vista county. He was baptised in the Lutheran church in Island Grove township and was confirmed in a country Lutheran church near Vincent, Iowa in 1889. On May 24, 1898 he was united in marriage to Anna Augusta Marie Schumann at the German Lutheran church in Grant township. Since that time they made their home in Buena Vista county. To this union seven children were born; four sons and three daughters. Those preceding him in death are his wife, who died in 1926; two daughters Mrs. William Just (Helena), and Mrs. James Banks (Dorothy); and one son, Ernest Edward, who died in infancy and two brothers, Henry and Louis. Those surviving are one sister, Helena of Storm Lake; one daughter, Irene of Storm Lake; and three sons, Elmer of St. Charles, Arthur of Osborn, and Albert of Osborn, Missouri, and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends.
