Upton B. Kepford Dies, 69; Lawyer Here Since 1908; On Heir Tax Appraisal Board; Former Police Judge; Funeral Tuesday;

Upton B. Kepford, 69, 407 Riverside drive, police judge in Waterloo from 1908 to 1910 and member of the state inheritance tax appraisal board for Black Hawk county, died early Sunday morning at St. Francis hospital of uremic poisoning, which followed a severe attack of bronchitis. He was admitted to the hospital Dec. 16, and for a time showed improvement, but the kidney ailment became aggravated last week. He had been in law practice, most of the time in the Commercial building, for 27 years, and had a wide acquaintance not only with members of the bar but the public at large thruout the county.

Born March 8, 1866, in Spring Creek township, the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. C. Kepford, Upton obtained his education in the county schools, at college in Findlay, O., and Iowa State Teachers college, Cedar Falls, of which he was an alumnus. For several years he taught rural schools, and then took up the study of law and was admitted to the state bar. In 1901, at Rowan, Ia., he married Miss Estella Brooks, who survives, with two sons, Upton B., Jr., a lawyer associated with his father, and Bryan, a law student in Drake university, Des Moines. A third son died early in life. Also surviving are a brother, Mert P. Kepford, auctioneer at Arriba, Colo., and two sisters, Miss Grace Kepford, Mission, Tex., and Mrs. Samuel Thomas, Puyallup, Wash. A brother, Aretus E. Kepford, former superintendent of the state boy's juvenile home at Toledo, and former lecturer on tuberculosis with the state department of health, died in 1930 at Gladbrook, Ia., and another brother, Dr. Clarence Kepford, dentist, died in 1918 at Monroe, Ia. Mr. Kepford was a member of the Black Hawk County Bar association and of Waterloo lodge, No. 105, A.F.& A.M.
