B. L. "Jake" Gaffney, 77, of Winthrop & Rowan IA died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, from a stroke. Services: 11 a.m. today, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Winthrop, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Patrick's Cemetery, south of Winthrop. Arrangements by Fawcett Funeral Home, Winthrop. Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son, Steve (Ann Klever) Gaffney of Winthrop; a daughter, Teri Sue (Tom) Brickley of Cedar Rapids; a grandson, Adam Brickley; and a brother, Andrew Gaffney of Oelwein. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter J. Gaffney and Anna McGraw Gaffney; two brothers, Harold and Bernard; and two sisters, Rose Short and Anna Gaffney. He graduated from Winthrop High School in 1941 and served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. He was united in marriage to Betty Hickman on May 1, 1947, and farmed on the Gaffney family farm all of his life.
