November 23, 1930 --- February 11, 2013

RAPID CITY, SD -- Dr. James A. Rud, 82, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Jim was born Nov. 23, 1930, in Lewistown, MT, to Oscar and Melva (Rindahl) Rud. He attended high school at Augustana Academy in Canton, SD, and graduated in 1949. Jim went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD. After his freshman year he enlisted in the SD Air National Guard. He was activated and served as a medic at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. Jim served several years with the Air National Guard in Sioux Falls as he finished college at Augustana graduating in 1955.

Jim married Eunice Ersland on August 20, 1954, in Sioux Falls. Jim attended medical school and obtained his medical degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1959. He interned for one year in Ogden, UT. Jim practiced general medicine in Buffalo Lake, MN, until 1962. He completed his Pathology Residency in 1966 and worked as a Pathologist in El Dorado, AR, for two years. Jim returned to South Dakota in 1969 and practiced in Watertown until 1981. Jim moved to Rapid City in the fall of 1981 and went to work for Clinical Laboratory of the Black Hills, where he became a partner. He retired in 1996. Jim was a member of South Canyon Lutheran Church and was part of the Rapid City Regional Hospital staff. Jim’s family, grandchildren, and his friends were important in his life. His profession was the utmost in importance. He enjoyed wood working, reading, and loved South Dakota.

Survivors include his wife, Eunice Rud, Rapid City; sons, Dr. John (Dr. Maria) Rud, Rapid City, and Daniel (Brenda) Rud, Rapid City; sister, Lois (Tony) Rubino, Barnegat, NJ; brother, Paul (Jan) Rud, Luverne, MN; grandchildren, Hunter Rud, Riley Rud, Morgan Smith, Mykel Smith; and numerous in-laws, nephews, and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Harold Rud; sister, Lydia Russeth; and granddaughter, Raven Rud.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at Kirk Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with the Rev. Bruce Thalacker officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City providing military honors. A memorial has been established to Alzheimer Research.
